What career progression path have you followed to date in your career in care?

I wanted to pursue this as a career and completed my QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework) level 3 in 2017.

I started working in care when I was 18 years old. In this time I have held various roles, including working in care / residential homes, supporting clients living with learning disabilities.

Last year I took up a part time caregiver position with Right at Home and progressed to a senior caregiver. While I really enjoyed being a caregiver and found it very rewarding, I wanted to progress in my career further, so when the right opportunity arose I applied for a management position.

What specific qualifications do you need for your role in care?

You don’t need any specific qualifications to start a career in care, as all training is provided by the employer to complete the care certificate. Further qualifications can be completed based on an individual’s interests.

Is there any additional training that has helped you to progress in your chosen career?

After completing my QCF level 3, I went on to do ‘Train the Trainer’, which helps guide new carers in broadening their knowledge.

What are the things you love most about working in the care industry?

Pre-pandemic I loved going in to meet the clients and support them with anything from personal care through to companionship. Being able to close the door knowing that I’ve been able to put a smile on the clients’ faces is hugely rewarding.

The pandemic has hit the older generation the most, isolating them from the outside world. Carers became their families and they relied on us for everything.

Knowing that I had visited a client and provided the right level of care, giving families peace of mind throughout such a difficult period where they were not able to see their loved ones, was extremely gratifying. A real sense of pride in being able to be able to make a difference in the community.

What advice would you give to others trying to get into the care industry?

What if I told you it’s possible to be the reason that someone smiles every day, simply by turning up to work?

For lots of Clients, the only time they speak to someone is when they receive their care call and it’s their favourite part of their day. If you think you can be that shining light to someone, apply for a role as a caregiver.
